I was waiting for the guy to tell the cameraman to piss off. I left disappointed.
That ditch is an improvement over what we have near my house. At least there’s a lip to help bump drivers back onto the road. Over the years I’ve seen o ur ditch swallow a Tacoma, a minivan (pictured below), and a concrete truck (still filled with concrete).
Don’t be fooled by that Tacoma sitting there. It wasn’t out for a rescue. He made the mistake of trying to drive through there when the water was over his wheel arches. I warned him not to go in. Then laughed at him when he walked out. This picture was taken the next day.
Here’s what the road looks like when it’s dry:
The lanes are 9-feet wide and the ditch is 3-4 feet deep here. And this is a small one!

I remember one night when I was the overnight duty officer, one of our village idiots had permission to go into town for the evening, and somehow drove his new blue Fit straight into a ditch in a really rural area and decided to call to see if I could wake someone up to come with a truck and pull him back onto the road. I don’t remember the whole conversation, but I asked him if we did tow him out, would the car be driveable after. He responded probably, but the windshield was smashed and the airbags were deployed, and asked if any of that would be a problem. I told him to call a tow truck, because he was going to need to get the thing to a body shop anyway, and I didn’t want to bother anyone with his stupidity in the middle of the night.
Anyway, he got it repaired, but it was totaled for good a few months later when he stopped in the left lane of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for some reason and got rear ended by an uninsured driver. The police report was very confusing and raised more questions than answers, but I believe he stopped to read an exit sign.

In his case, he got his learners permit at 19 and his license at 20, because there were always other people around to drive him places, so there was no pressure to get it done, and he was also terrified of getting behind the wheel. Overly timid drivers can be every bit as dangerous as overly aggressive ones.
